Painting by number: we make a big deal out of it 😊
WHAT IS PAINT BY NUMBER?
Painting by number is an art method and a creative hobby which consists of painting a work on a pre-printed canvas, broken down into a multitude of numbered areas.
The principle is therefore to paint each numbered area (corresponding to a color) with the associated paint pot, to ultimately create a complete work from A to Z.
Many designs are available with complete kits that include all the materials needed to paint.
BUT IT IS NOT FINISHED !
Painting by number highlights the fact that a painting is constructed with a multitude of shapes and colors. Separated they appear quite abstract, but put end to end they then take on their full meaning.
Painting by number also allows you to learn, from a photo, to clearly identify different areas, tonal changes and color variations. This is part of the learning methods to gradually paint works from a blank canvas. With experience, you will become more and more fluid in your brush strokes and will be able to easily visualize the different areas from any photo.

HISTORY QUESTION? YOU'LL NEVER GUESS HOW IT ALL STARTED!
Painting by number appeared a long time ago. This fun activity was popularized in the 1950s in the United States by the artist Dan Robbins, an artist who worked for the American company Palmer Show Card Paint Co of Max S. Klein.
But Leonardo da Vinci was certainly the precursor and the first to model this painting technique. He is known for teaching his students painting by numbering certain areas of blank canvases to guide his students in choosing which paint colors to use.
Dan Robbins' genius idea was to take the basic idea and make the art of painting accessible to everyone with different designs.
The success was immediate and the Palmer Show Card Paint Co. then developed numerous paint-by-number kits for adults.
Dan Robbins: The pioneer of paint by numbers
The message at the time was quite artistically oriented: you can all become a famous painter, you might be the new Rembrandt!
Millions of Americans, like then President Dwight Eisenhower, then began to paint numbered canvases with their corresponding small pots of paint.
Many artists of the time also used the paint-by-numbers technique in preparing canvases to reproduce works from photos.
It was also the appearance of the Pop'art effect in the 1960s, when Andy Warhol launched semi-finished Pop'art paintings to paint, what we call in English DIY, Do It Yourself, " to do it yourself” in French.
